What are the big storylines of 2025-26?
Melbourne City return as Isuzu UTE A-League Champions after downing Melbourne Victory 1-0 in the first-ever Melbourne Derby Grand Final – their title defence will occur alongside an AFC Champions League Elite campaign.
Auckland FC, meanwhile, return for the club’s second season after a remarkable inaugural term which saw Steve Corica’s side lift the Premiers Plate. But the Black Knights failed to convert their Premiership into a trophy double, losing to Melbourne Victory in the Semi-Finals in a major upset. Whether Corica and Co. can recapture the magic of season 2024-25 and make another tilt at the title will be a key story to follow this season.
Melbourne City aren’t the only team competing in Asia; the new-look Macarthur Bulls are in the midst of their AFC Champions League Two group stage duties as the Isuzu UTE A-League season nears and Mile Sterjovski’s side will be hoping to replicate Central Coast Mariners’ efforts in the AFC Cup in 2024 by making a deep run in Asia’s second-tier continental club competition.
Down the other end of the table, Perth Glory are looking to avoid three consecutive wooden spoons while Brisbane Roar hope to convert a promising run of pre-season form into a run at the Finals Series. Same goes for Newcastle Jets who, under new head coach Mark Milligan, won the 2025 Hahn Australia Cup to end the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
Adelaide United legend Craig Goodwin is back at the Reds this season, while Spanish World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Europa League winner Juan Mata has swapped Western Sydney Wanderers for Melbourne Victory – and that’s just scratching the surface of player movement in the off-season.
To read more about the key storylines surrounding each club for season 2025-26, read aleagues.com.au’s three-part series of burning questions facing every team.

What happened in the transfer window?
A grand total of 110 transfers occurred in the Isuzu UTE A-League off-season and with clubs still able to acquire players who were free agents when the window shut on September 15, that number is likely to increase as the season start date of October 17 draws near.
Adelaide United lured club legend Craig Goodwin back to the club after a two-season absence, Juan Mata left Western Sydney Wanderers for Melbourne Victory and 24-year-old Peru international Piero Quispe joined Sydney FC on loan from Mexican giants Pumas UNAM in some of the headline moves of the window.
