Adelaide United confirmed club legends Isaias Sanchez and Javi Lopez have retired from professional football but the Spanish duo will remain at the club in coaching capacities.
The retirements of Isaias and Lopez marks the end of an era for “two of the most influential and beloved figures in Reds’ history” however they will remain at the Isuzu UTE A-League outfit next season with further details to be provided in the off-season.

Isaias – the club’s all-time appearance leader – and Lopez combined for almost 400 games as Adelaide players, with the former helping deliver the 2016 Championship.

“Javi and Isa have been two of the most respected and influential figures in our club’s history. Their impact cannot be overstated – they have elevated standards, inspired teammates, and represented Adelaide United with class and distinction,” said head of football Marius Zanin.
“We’re incredibly fortunate that their journey with the club will continue in coaching roles, where they will shape the next generation and pass on the values they have embodied throughout their careers.”

Isaias hangs up his boots after the 38-year-old amassed 289 matches across two stints with Adelaide.
The former Espanyol midfielder, who initially arrived in 2013, scored 10 goals and lifted every major piece of domestic silverware in Australia – the Championship and Premiership in Adelaide’s 2015-16 double-winning campaign.
Isaias also won a pair of Australia Cup titles, to go with four Aurelio Vidmar Medals.

“I’m incredibly proud of everything this journey has given me — the places I’ve travelled, the lessons I’ve learned, and the incredible people I’ve met along the way,” Isaias said.
“Football has shaped who I am, and Adelaide United has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my life. This club will always be part of me, and Adelaide is truly my home.
“I want to thank my teammates, coaches, and the staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes — your support has meant so much to me. To the fans, your passion and warmth have created memories I’ll never forget. Every time I stepped onto the pitch, I felt your energy, and it pushed me to give everything I had.
“I’ll carry these experiences with me into the next chapter, and I’m excited to keep contributing to this special club in a new way. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this journey so unforgettable.”

As for Lopez, the 39-year-old spent the past five seasons with Adelaide after a distinguished career that saw him captain LaLiga outfit Espanyol.
He made 91 A-Leagues appearances and nine across all competitions, scoring four goals.

Lopez added: “Adelaide United welcomed me with open arms during one of the most difficult times in my life, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.
“This club helped me rediscover my love for football and, more importantly, my love for life. From the very beginning, I felt genuine care and support from every corner of the club — players, coaches, staff, and fans.
“I’ve been lucky to share the pitch with incredible teammates and lifelong friends, and to be part of a culture built on humility, passion, and togetherness. The bonds I’ve made here, both on and off the field, are something I will carry with me forever.
“To the fans, thank you for your warmth, your humour, and your incredible energy — you created the best atmosphere in Australia and made every match at Coopers Stadium feel special.
