Wanderers star seals exciting Scottish transfer after career-best season

Western Sydney Wanderers star Zac Sapsford has sealed an exciting transfer to Scotland, joining Dundee United on a three-year deal.

The Wanderers have netted an ‘undisclosed transfer fee’ for the 22-year-old who enjoyed a breakout season in the Isuzu UTE A-League, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 25 appearances.

After crossing the Sydney divide in 2022, Sapsford tallied a total of 48 appearances and scored 12 goals for the red and black, and entered club folklore with his stellar performances in the Sydney Derby, coming back to haunt his old side Sydney FC.

“He’s a dynamic forward with a killer instinct in the final third, off both feet or with his head. He also has the awareness to intelligently bring his teammates into play,” Dundee boss Jim Goodwin told the club’s official website.

“We feel he’s someone that will get our supporters out of their seats and we can rely on in big moments given his mentality and track record in those situations.

“Zac immediately bought into our vision for him and his development. I’m looking forward to closely monitoring his progression during his time in tangerine.”

Dundee’s Head of Recruitment Ross Goodwin added: “Zac was a player who piqued our interest after being flagged by the club’s internal data models.

“And he impressed when we followed this up with more traditional scouting methods. These new processes combined with conventional, in-person talent ID will be pivotal in identifying new additions throughout the summer and beyond.

“We fought off stiff competition from across the globe for his signature, so we’re incredibly pleased to have the deal over the line so early in the window, and we look forward to unveiling more exciting new signings.”

Sapsford is now in line to play Europa Conference League football this season after Dundee United sealed their spot by finishing fourth in the Scottish Premiership.

Wanderers will almost certainly be in the market for forwards this off-season, with Sapsford joining teammate Nicolas Milanovic in sealing a move to Scotland in the past few weeks.

Alen Stajcic will be looking to build on an impressive first season at the helm in Wanderland, where he united the supporter base and secured Finals football.
