Auckland FC fan favourite’s emotional exit confirmed after impressive debut season

Auckland FC have confirmed the departure of Colombian forward Neyder Moreno after an impressive debut campaign.

The 28-year-old fan favourite scored eight goals and registered three assists across 24 matches, but has left the Isuzu UTE A-League outfit ‘to seek new opportunities overseas’.

Arriving just a week before the club’s inaugural season kicked off, Moreno endeared himself to supporters with a string of memorable moments.

“With a lump in my throat, but with much gratitude, I say goodbye to the team that has been like a second family to me,” said Moreno.

“I carry with me great memories, sincere friendships and a deep respect for everyone at Auckland FC. I will always wear the team colours in my heart.”

Head coach Steve Corica said Moreno would forever be remembered as an integral part of the team that helped Auckland FC win the Premier’s Plate in its debut season.

“He is a fantastic player, a great trainer and I know how much he appreciated the love of the fans,” Corica said.

“He is part of a team that made history and will be remembered with fondness. We wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Auckland’s maiden campaign was one to remember. The Black Knights became the first New Zealand based side to win an A-Leagues trophy as they finished top of the table to claim the Premiers Plate, but fell short in the Semi-Finals as they were beaten over two legs by Melbourne Victory.

Now all eyes turn to season two.
