Sydney FC CEO’s vow to fans after disappointing season: ‘Any actions deemed necessary’

Sydney FC CEO Mark Aubrey has vowed the club will take “any actions deemed necessary” to improve on the club’s disappointing 2024-25 campaign, after the Sky Blues’ men’s and women’s sides both failed to make finals in their respective competitions.

Sydney’s Isuzu UTE A-League men’s outfit’s season came to an end on Saturday when a hefty 5-1 loss to Melbourne City left Ufuk Talay’s side one point short of sixth-placed Adelaide United.

The Sky Blues needed just one point from their last two games to qualify for the Finals Series but losses to Western United and City compounded the disappointment of a season which included a Semi-Final defeat to Singaporean outfit Lion City Sailors in the AFC Champions League Two.

Semi-Finalists last season, Sydney fell short of a top-six finish for the first time since 2022 to miss the Finals Series for the sixth time in the club’s 20-year history.

Sydney FC lost 5-1 to Melbourne CIty on Saturday in a result that ended the club’s Finals Series push.

In the Ninja A-League Women, meanwhile, Ante Juric’s Sky Blues came into the 2024-25 campaign as the reigning champions in pursuit of their third consecutive Championship title but, despite a late-season flourish of form, the three-peat chasers finished eight points shy of the top six to miss the Finals Series for the first time in the club’s history.

Sydney FC’s Ninja A-League side rallied late but couldn’t find the points needed to reach the Finals Series.

In an open letter to the club’s fans, Sydney CEO Aubrey reflected on the disappointment of the season and promised a comprehensive off-season review to identify possible actions to ensure on-field improvement on all fronts in 2025-26.

“Please make no mistake, your feelings of frustration and extreme disappointment at how this season has ended are shared by me, and every single person at Sydney FC,” Aubrey wrote.

“We had very high expectations and didn’t deliver (and) we know you expect better and feel let down by this result.

“It has not been good enough and like you, my feelings of hurt and what should have been will take some time to subside.

“Without making excuses, the burden of this season’s Asian campaign did take its toll physically, and while we are proud to go further than ever before, our league form has not produced what we expect.

“Sydney FC’s standard is winning titles and qualification for Asia.

“Every year a comprehensive post-season review is done by the Board analysing all elements of our management, recruitment and team and this work is already underway,” Aubrey continued.

“Our expectation is that we are competing for trophies in all competitions.

“Any actions deemed necessary and in line with Sydney FC’s growth strategy and future success, will be implemented and communicated to you in due course.

“Those measures, I trust, will ensure we rebound from this campaign in the best possible manner and restore our club to winning ways.

“Thank you for your support again this season and it is my promise we will do all that we can to return your club to winning ways.

“We expect to be back bigger and better next season.”

The Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series officially gets underway on Friday, May 9 when third-placed Western United host sixth-placed Adelaide United in the first of the Elimination Finals.

Then on Saturday May 10 fourth-placed Western Sydney Wanderers welcome fifth-placed Melbourne Victory to CommBank Stadium for the right to make it through to the Semi-Finals.
