First up, third-placed Western United earned the right to host their Elimination Final which sees them host sixth-placed Adelaide United on Friday May 9.
Whilst Western were already assured of their spot in the six, Adelaide had a nervy wait to book their place in the finals and did so by finishing a point ahead of Sydney FC – who lost their final two matches of the season when needing just a point in order to usurp the Reds.
Then on Saturday night two of the league’s biggest clubs go head-to-head at CommBank Stadium as fourth-place Western Sydney Wanderers face off against fifth-placed Melbourne Victory.
With both teams booking their spots in the Finals Series with games to spare, the Wanderers closed out the regular season with an emphatic 3-1 derby win over Macarthur Bulls while Victory were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park in the final game of the campaign.
A-Leagues Executive Chair, Hon. Stephen Conroy said: “It’s been an incredible 20th season of the Isuzu UTE A-League Men with history made on and off the pitch, entertaining football with a record number of goals, and continued growth in attendance and free-to-air audiences.”
“It’s testament to the evenness of the competition to see the top six places locked in, in the final weekend of the regular season. We can’t wait for what should be an incredible finals series with huge matches and rivalries to be played across Australia and New Zealand.”
