Brisbane Roar head coach Ruben Zadkovich confirmed there has been “a lot of interest” in teenage sensation Lucas Herrington amid mounting speculation.
Zadkovich was responding to rumours after A-Leagues and Network 10 commentator Simon Hill claimed MLS side Colorado Rapids are reportedly on the verge of signing the 17-year-old centre-back from Brisbane.
The young gun is highly rated at Roar, where he has graduated from the club’s academy, with Zadkovich previously labelling him as the “best defender in Australian football”.

“There’s been a lot of interest around Lucas,” the Roar boss told reporters following Friday night’s 5-1 loss to Macarthur Bulls.
“I feel like Lucas’ performance throughout this season, he’s kept guys like Adam Taggart quiet, (Patryk) Klimala quiet, (Bruno) Fornaroli – these types of people. He’s done well in a lot of games.
“I feel like it won’t just be one or two teams scouting him, there will be a lot. A sale for this club would be a big positive out of this season. That’s what I’ve worked towards.
“We’ve done a good job to sell Thomas Waddingham (to Portsmouth). Like I said this week, it would’ve been nice to hold on to Tommy for longer. I think we could’ve doubled or tripled the sale had he kept scoring at that rate. But the club is in the type of position where we need that money and we need that money to keep the place alive.
“Hopefully there’s a sale there for Lucas and that can be another positive from this body of work that we’ve pulled a 17-year-old kid from our own state and made him a fully fledged professional footballer.
“If we can get a big sale for him, hopefully those finances come in handy for us because we do need it.”

Asked if Herrington is ready for a move abroad, Zadkovich replied: “Depends on the move. It has to the right club, coach and environment.
“But there are a lot of clubs who would be interested in him. It’s about him picking the right move for him and his football journey.
“We will obviously mentor and help him through that process. But there’s a business side of football and if the player wants to go and it’s the right price then it’s good for our club.”
