Wellington Phoenix make splash with signing of ‘standout’ Ninja A-League star

Wellington Phoenix have announced the signing of Dominican Republic international captain Lucia Leon for the 2025-26 Ninja A-League season.

It is a coup for the Phoenix after star wing-back Leon starred for Adelaide United last season.

The 27-year-old made 26 appearances for the Reds in her first campaign Down Under, where she was a key contributor to Adelaide’s surge from a wooden spoon finish in 2023-24 to third place by the end of the season.

“The A-League is very cool, a well-organised league, a good competition that is still growing,” said Leon.

“The opportunity for New Zealand came through, and we made the decision to stay in the league.”

“Even though I’m classified as a defender, I would describe myself as aggressive going forward. I’ve always tried to do stuff that is exciting for the crowd,” added the former Tottenham, Watford and Real Betis defender.

“I’ve played in a wing-back position with a lot of freedom to attack, to explore. I’m a creative player, so I try to read the game, be more strategic and use my technique.

“Representing the Dominican Republic is an honour for me. It’s something that I also try to bring to my club, and hopefully everyone gets to know a little more of my roots.

“I’m excited to bring that cultural side to the team. I’m just excited to meet everyone, the fans as well.”

Interim Phoenix head coach Amy Shepherd said: “A proven talent in the A-League Women, Lucía brings a wealth of international experience, having played in Spain’s Liga F, England’s Women’s Super League, and more recently here in Australia.

“With standout statistics in her position, Lucía’s ability to take on players in 1v1 situations and contribute to the scoreline—either by scoring or assisting—makes her a highly valued asset.

“As captain of her national team, Lucía’s leadership extends beyond the field, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Phoenix whanau.”

Leon is the 10th Wellington Phoenix women’s player contracted for the 2025-26 Ninja A-League season, with discussions continuing with other off-contract players.
