North Queensland Fury has been dealt a bitter blow ahead of its first Hyundai A-League match against Sydney on August 8 with experienced defender Scott Wilson to miss up to eight weeks with a broken foot.
Wilson, who previously played for Rangers and Dunfermline in the Scottish Premier League, suffered the injury in the recent match against EPL outfit Wolves in Perth.
The 32-year-old had played much of the pre-season with the club and was set to be a vital cog in Ian Ferguson’s defence. On Wilson arrival at the club, Ferguson, who played with him at Rangers in the 1990s, said the central defender’s experience will be important for the fledgling club in their debut season.
But it now appears he will miss the first quarter of the Fury’s inaugural campaign after the injury suffered during a seemingly harmless contest between he and a Wolves player on July 15 in Perth.
The Fury recently signed defenders Karl Dodd and Jack Hingert and both of those players could now be in the running to start against Sydney given Wilson’s absence.
