Melbourne City will be out for blood this season after their quest for a treble in 2024-25 ended with just one trophy – the Ninja A-League Premiership – added to the cabinet.
After an unbeaten, “invincible” regular season, City clinched the Premiership at a canter and, having gone through the AFC Women’s Champions League campaign without defeat, had romped to the final of the continental tournament.
As the Finals Series began, Michael Matricciani’s side had eyes on the Ninja A-League Championship and a win over Wuhan Jianga in the Champions League final to seal an unprecedented trophy treble – but that didn’t go to plan.
City were bundled out of the Ninja A-League Finals Series by eventual Champions Central Coast in a stunning Semi-Final upset. Then, they were defeated by Wuhan in the Champions League decider.
The heartbreaking end to 2024-25 has lit a fire in the City camp – and that smells trouble for their Ninja A-League competitors this season.
Led by CommBank Matildas and City superstar Holly McNamara, City return for their Premiership defence bolstered by the arrival of former Everton captain and Aston Villa star Danielle Turner, as well as Nigerian international Chinaza Uchendu and English defender Elli Wilson, who joined the club from local rivals Melbourne Victory.
