Sydney FC have appointed Tony Pignata as chief executive following the sacking of Dirk Melton in March.
Melton’s contract was immediately terminated by the club following a series of ‘serious complaints’ against him by Sydney FC staff members.
But the club have now shored up their administrative structure through the appointment of former Wellingtonc chief Pignata earlier this week.
“I am thrilled to be appointed as CEO of Sydney FC,” Pignata said in a media release.
“Sydney FC is one of the flagships of the A-League and it will be a privilege to work at such a strong club at what is a very exciting time in the evolution of the competition.
“It’s great to be back in football, which is my passion, and I look forward to working with the board, staff, players and fans at Sydney FC.”
Pignata becomes Sydney’s seventh CEO in seven seasons but the 47-year-old seems a good candidate for the position, boasting a strong background in the game.
He was also chief executive of Football Federation Victoria for three years.
Pignata was in the running for the job before Melton’s appointment, but has now succeeded in winning the role a year later.
“On behalf of the board I’d like to congratulate Tony on his appointment and welcome him to Sydney FC,” club chairman Scott Barlow said.
“Tony has a proven track record of successfully managing an A-League club and a State Federation, as well as a wealth of commercial acumen gained from his background in the Banking and Finance industry.”
