There is surely no better way to do just that than by beating the team that served up their most devastating result so far in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season. Sydney are coming to The Beach. It’s time to get some revenge!
United fans need no reminding about the last encounter between these two sides. Week 5 saw an absolutely thrilling battle at Sydney Football Stadium, but the quality of entertainment will be of no consolation to the Gold Coast, who somehow went from a 2-0 winning position with half-an-hour remaining, to making the journey home empty-handed.
The visitors seemed destined to secure a valuable away win after a fine header from Kristian Rees in the first-half and a cool finish from Dylan Macallister early in the second put them in a commanding position.
However, Sydney put in an amazing display in the last half-hour to grab three goals and leave United shell-shocked. After Bruno Cazarine pulled one back, Nicky Carle scored his third goal in as many games, before an injury-time Karol Kisel penalty decided it.
The pain of that defeat is still fresh for Gold Coast United, so players, management and fans alike will be eager to lay those ghosts to rest and seek revenge on Sydney FC. A win would be the perfect tonic!
And the need for a victory is becoming increasingly urgent for United, after they suffered yet another loss last Saturday. The 2-0 defeat in Perth – which came about due to a sloppy disciplinary display – was their fifth in a row.
A crazy handball by Zachary Anderson and a clumsy challenge by Ben Halloran gifted Perth two penalties which were converted and then United ended the game with ten men after Anderson’s foul on Andrezinho saw him handed his second caution. They’ll need to be more disciplined on Sunday.
Sydney FC make the trip to the Gold Coast having become accustomed to performing away from their regular home, as their last two matches were played in regional NSW.
The Sky Blues secured the result of the season so far by becoming the team which finally toppled Brisbane Roar. The momentous win was achieved in rainy conditions at WIN Jubilee Oval on Sunday and it was clear that the home side were up for it from the very start.
Indeed, an especially pleasing aspect for Sydney was that they scored first in a game for only the second time this season. Dimitri Petratos’ strike came after just 36 seconds. Most fans had barely even taken their places in the ground! Then, when Michael Theoklitos made a mess of Brett Emerton’s corner on 19 minutes, it was 2-0. Sydney’s relocated Cove was in dreamland! The team held on comfortably as well, in what was a great all-round display.
United’s run of defeats all started in the horror half-hour at Sydney Football Stadium a few weeks ago, so what better way to stem it than by gaining a win against them this weekend?
