Melbourne City have secured the services of experienced Socceroo Mathew Leckie for at least another season after the veteran midfielder signed a one-year contract extension with a trigger for a further year.
Leckie has become a key figure at City since arriving ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, making 90 appearances in all competitions while scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists during one of the club’s most successful periods.
A two-time Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership winner, Leckie etched his name into City folklore in the 2025 Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final.

The Socceroo produced a tireless display in the first-ever Melbourne Derby decider, finishing the match bloodied, bandaged and bruised as City defeated Melbourne Victory 1-0 to claim the Championship.
His performance earned him the Joe Marston Medal as Player of the Match.
Leckie has also continued to add to his international legacy during his time at City. After scoring Australia’s decisive goal against Denmark at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he recently became just the fourth Socceroo to represent Australia at four FIFA World Cups.
Now established in a central midfield role, the 35-year-old will remain an important part of Aurelio Vidmar’s squad heading into the 2026/27 season.
“I’ve loved representing my hometown club over the past five years, and I’m really pleased to be staying for another season,” Leckie said.
“We’ve shared some incredible moments, and I’m as motivated as ever to help us compete for more silverware.
“I’m looking forward to getting back out there with the boys and doing everything the team needs from me to make it another successful season.”
Melbourne City Director of Football Michael Petrillo said retaining Leckie was an important piece of the club’s plans.
“Mat has consistently shown that when he’s on the pitch, he remains one of the A-League’s most influential players,” Petrillo said.
“The standards he sets through his leadership and professionalism are invaluable to our squad, both on and off the pitch.
“We’re confident Mat has plenty more to contribute, and we’re delighted he’ll continue in City blue for the season ahead.”
Leckie becomes the sixth player to have put pen-to-paper on new terms with the club this off-season, following on from the likes of Ben Mazzeo, Harrison Delbridge and former Socceroos winger Andrew Nabbout.
Meanwhile the club has also brought in high-rated teen Quinn MacNicol from Brisbane Roar and goalkeeper Macklin Freke from the same club following the departure of Socceroos keeper Patrick Beach, who joined French side Troyes following an impressive World Cup campaign.
