Western Sydney forward Brandon Borrello believes the Wanderers have made the right steps to righting the wrongs of their disastrous 2025/26 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.
Having qualified for the Finals Series in season 2024/25 the Wanderers then endured a miserable campaign last season, losing 15 matches in total as they secured an unwanted wooden spoon – the first in club history for the men’s side.
But while the club’s poor showing in 2025/26 will now always be etched in the history books, Borrello believes the Wanderers are making the right moves in a bid to be in much better shape ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Wanderers kicked off their pre-season campaign with a dominant 2-0 win over Tigers FC in the 2026 Australia Cup Round of 32 last week and now face Premier League giants Chelsea on Tuesday night as part of the Sydney Super Cup.
“The club’s making making changes from within. The right ones, I think,” Borrello said, when speaking at a media conference ahead of the opening game of the Sydney Super Cup.
“You kind of want to forget about it (last season), but winning’s a habit and losing’s a habit.
“So you know, I guess the biggest thing for us as players is notifying what went wrong last year and our sort of behaviours and sort of rectifying that this year.”
Borrello subsequently confirmed that as part of that learning process the Wanderers playing group conducted an honest review of the season, looking into where things went wrong.

“Yeah, we went through it not just with the leadership group, but with everyone. You know, we all sat down and had you know that sort of ‘look at yourself in the mirror talk’ because it wasn’t good enough across the board for all the players.
“You know, there’s still a few boys left over from last year, and we all understand what this club means, what our club means to you know the community of Western Sydney.
“We need to make a big change, and we’ve seen that in drips and drabs. You know, we’re slowly trying to change our identity, our culture from within the club, and it’s been a very positive start to the pre-season”
Whilst there has been plenty of chance amongst the playing group in Western Sydney the Wanderers will also be under new leadership this coming season, with former Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay officially taking the reigns after departing the Sky Blues towards the back end of the 2025/26 campaign.

“Look, there’s some really good people at the club, and I think the club has been yearning for that success for a long time,” Talay said.
“It’s a slow build. Things aren’t going to change overnight, but I think the players that we brought in, the staff that we have, we’re slowly trying to implement certain things that we believe will take the club forward.
“I think there’s been good buy in from the players at the moment of what we’re trying to do on and off the field, but I think we’ll get there.
“Like I said, it’s not going to happen overnight, but we’re slowly starting to get there.”
The Wanderers kick off the 2026 Sydney Super Cup with a clash against Chelsea at Accor Stadium on Tuesday night.
Isuzu UTE A-League rivals Sydney FC then take on Tottenham Hotspur at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday, July 29 before Chelsea and Spurs face-off at Accor Stadium on Saturday, August 1.
