Vine & Whyman return to help Sydney’s quest to clinch ‘Championship set’ amid overseas interest

Sydney FC won another A-League Women Premiership and reached the Grand Final last season, but Cortnee Vine and Jada Whyman have unfinished business with the Sky Blues after the star duo and Matildas pair re-signed.

Vine and Whyman have been influential in Sydney, winning back-to-back Premierships and earning consecutive Grand Final runners-up medals.

But a Championship is missing for the Australia pair, who will don the Sky Blue colours again in the 2022-23 Liberty A-League season and they will kick-off the campaign away to Adelaide United at ServiceFM Stadium on November 20.

Vine has re-committed to Sydney, despite interest from abroad.

Vine poses after receiving the Liberty A-League Women’s Golden Boot Award during the Sydney FC awards.

“I feel very at home at Sydney FC and the club and our squad are like family to me so I had no hesitation in re-signing,” said the versatile 24-year-old, who scored six goals last season.

“We feel we’ve been the best club over the past few years having consistently won trophies and qualified for Grand Finals and we’ve got another very good chance this season with the players in our side.

“Playing for the Matildas at the new Allianz Stadium gave me a real sense of how incredible it is to play there and I can’t wait to go back again this season.”

Whyman has been a key figure for the Sky Blues.

Whyman has soared to historic heights with Sydney under Ante Juric.

In 2021-22, the 22-year-old broke the record for most consecutive clean sheets in A-League Women history.

Whyman – whose Sky Blues lost to Melbourne Victory in the Grand Final – added: “I’ve had a fantastic journey since I arrived at Sydney FC, and we’ve had some brilliant wins and successes, but there’s a real determination this season to complete the Championship set.

“The season is longer and it’s going to be tough but it’s also exciting and I can’t wait to get going.”
