Roar ready to rumble

Queensland will head into Sunday’s Hyundai A-League match against Wellington full of confidence and eager to win a club-record third consecutive home victory.

The Roar have only conceded 15 goals in their 15 matches this year, ranking them No.1 for goals against and coach Frank Farina has lauded his side’s defensive line for the rise up to second place on the ladder.

But despite the good defensive record, Farina knows all too well the danger provided by prolific Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz, who leads the scoring list this season with 10 goals.

“Three points on Sunday are essential and they’ll be very valuable if we can get them,” Farina said.

“He’s obviously their key strike weapon, (Leo) Bertos I thought played well for them last week as well, but Smeltz is their go to man for goals.”

“He’s the danger and a threat, but we-ve got the best defensive record in the league as well.”

“Marshaled by Craig (Moore), Luke’s (DeVere) been doing very well and obviously Josh (McCloughan) as well so it will be an interesting battle.”

An injury to Danny Tiatto has opened the door for midfielder Chris Grossman to make his first appearance for the senior side this season.

On the back of some strong performances in the National Youth League, Grossman will slot comfortably into the defensive midfield position.

Grossman recently signed for next season’s new boys North Queensland Fury, but Farina has no concerns about the youngster’s focus on Sunday.

“It’s his first start for the season, but obviously the advantage of having the youth league will assure him, and us, that he’ll be fully match fit,” he said.

“Chris is a good player and always has been, he’ll give his best for the club until such time as he joins North Queensland.”

“He’s a good pro and I expect nothing less than him giving 100 per cent, which I know he will.”
