Karla Reuter is hoping for a goalscoring return to Ballymore when Queensland Roar Women take centre stage at a double header against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.
With the Westfield W-League Premiership safely secured, the defender is hoping for another taste of personal glory at the ground where she opened her account two weeks ago.
“We have a bit of a competition between the backs to see who can get the most goals during the season so it-s always fun,” Reuter said.
“As a defender we don-t usually get that chance to get up there, score a goal and take a bit of the glory. We do a lot of hard work and it-s always un-noticed so to get on the scoresheet is good.”
However, the left full back was all about giving today as she joined team mates Jenna Tristram, Clare Polkinghorne and Kim Carroll spreading Christmas cheer at the Royal Children-s Hospital.
The visit left Reuter so touched she said she planned to go back for another visit in the New Year.
“They-re all very spirited and positive and still smiling which is very encouraging and makes our problems look very minor,” she said.
After the men-s team visited yesterday, Reuter said it was a very worthwhile visit for the women.
“There were a few girls in there and there was one girl in particular who had represented the state in touch so I think it was good for her to see you can go places in women-s sport.”
Reuter will now turn her focus just up the road to Ballymore, where she was hoping for a good crowd to celebrate their success and also support Roar Youth in the curtain-raiser.
“The youth boys are sitting high up on the table as well so they-ll be quality games and I think there-s a good reason to get out on a Saturday afternoon,” she said.
She said coach Jeff Hopkins could be tempted to test the squad-s depth in the last two rounds before the finals.
“We-re still looking to win the next two games and maybe even give a few of the other girls an opportunity to play.
“You never know what injuries may happen around the corner and they may need to play in the semi-finals or grand final if we make it.
“We-ve got great depth this year at the Roar and it-s been shown by Courtney (Beutel) stepping in for (injured striker) Jenna (Tristram) this year.
“She-s really taken her chance and if she keeps scoring the way she does she could take the golden boot if we have one.”
Queensland Roar Women-s match against the Central Coast Mariners at Ballymore kicks off at 6pm, with a National Youth League curtain-raiser at 3.30pm.
Tickets will be available from the Clyde Road entrance from 3pm.
