Time to make amends. The last time Brisbane roared at the Bluetongue it ended in humiliation for Mariners. Now they want payback!
Central Coast Mariners have given an outstanding account of themselves in the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season. They have picked up fine away wins, been very strong at home and have dished out the occasional thrashing.
Very few times have they let themselves down. There is, however, one particular occasion that they will be very keen to forget, and that is the 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Brisbane at the Bluetongue in November.
Everyone knows that, on their day, Brisbane are a truly exceptional football team. Going forward, their movement and passing can be breathtaking and they can rip teams apart, sometimes seemingly at will. Therefore, when you are up against them, the one thing you need to do is keep it tight in the early stages.
One would think that Mariners, with their fine defence, would be more than capable of doing such a thing. However, on this occasion, Brisbane flew into a two-goal lead in the first ten minutes. When you gift a team like Roar a two-goal start, there is simply no coming back.
And so it proved. After Jean Carlos Solorzano-s early brace, Mitch Nichols ended the contest before half time, but more was to follow from the visitors. After a second half strike from Adam Kwasnik gave the Yellow Army false hope, Reinaldo made it four before an own goal from Alex Wilkinson and a red card from Daniel McBreen compounded Mariners- misery.
You can be certain of one thing though; the Yellow and Navy will be sure to give a better account of themselves on Wednesday. Graham Arnold will insist on as much from his talented young squad, and at the final whistle, Brisbane Roar will at the very least know they were involved in quite a game.
Roar will be looking to go into a run of three home games from their last four on a high by picking up three points at the Bluetongue and making it a hat-trick of wins against the Yellow and Navy. The home straight beckons, what a confidence boost it would be for Ange Postecoglou-s side if they could put in a similar performance to the one that wiped the floor with Mariners last time they visited.
