Pouncing on a misplaced pass from Fabio intended for Leigh Broxham on the edge of Melbourne’s area, the frontman lashed the winner past Covic and sent the massed ranks of Reds fans wild.
However, despite the win, Rini Coolen might be slightly concerned about another slow start from his men. Just as they were in Perth, the Reds were second best during the first period against a strong Victory side.
However, the coach’s half-time team-talk clearly spurred his troops on and their second-half display was impressive indeed. If they can stretch such a performance over 90 minutes, Sydney could be in real trouble on Saturday.
The Sky Blues head into the match looking for their first win and their first goal in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season after an impressive opening day draw in Melbourne was followed by defeat at home to Brisbane last Saturday night.
Of course, losing to Roar does not necessarily mean Sydney are a bad side. In fact, they started brightly enough against the champions and, had the ball fallen kinder to Nick Carle and Bruno Cazarine in front of goal, it might have been a different story.
They certainly won’t be a pushover on Saturday and, with Brett Emerton still looking to burst into form, Adelaide will need to be wary of an opposition side that has a lot to offer and the ability to prove that they can be at the right end of the ladder at the season’s end.
The visitors will once more be without Mark Bridge though, as he sits out the last of a two-game suspension after his red card against Victory.
This one could go either way, so Reds fans, you can do your bit by making it another sell-out and creating non-stop noise from first whistle to last.
