They might have already secured second spot but there will be no holding back when the Central Coast Mariners take on arch-rivals Newcastle in a final round Hyundai A-League showdown at Gosford on Sunday.
While the Jets are battling just to make the top six with one game to play, the Mariners are in great form and hell-bent on beating Brisbane over two legs in next week’s grand final qualifier.
Before focusing on the Roar, the Mariners are determined to give their fans plenty to cheer about at Bluetongue Stadium against the Jets.
Coach Graham Arnold was without several players during the midweek victory against Gold Coast and promoted several young players.
Bernie Ibini-Isei and Mustafa Amini both scored their first A-League goals in the win and are expected to get more game time on Sunday, especially with first grade regulars Matt Simon and Rostyn Griffiths not expected to play. Attacking midfielder Patricio Perez was a late withdrawal on Wednesday night and may not be risked before the finals.
One player desperate for another big performance is left-sided midfielder Oliver Bozanic.
Since returning from several seasons in England, Bozanic has been outstanding for the Mariners.
His form down the left side of the field and combination play with left back Josh Rose has been a feature of the Mariners charge to second spot.
“I’ve been pretty happy with my form but I’m always looking at ways to improve,” Bozanic said.
“I’m looking forward to the chance to play in the finals but we’ve got to focus on Newcastle first.”
