Lengthy ban proposed for Roar midfielder, Jets star handed show cause notice for gesture

Brisbane Roar midfielder Momo Hayashi is set to sit out the beginning of the 2025-26 Ninja A-League season after receiving a red card in her side’s final game of the current campaign.

Hayashi was sent off after making contact with referee Izzy Cooper in the second half of Brisbane’s Round 23 loss to Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

Football Australia’s independent Match Review Panel (MRP) convened on Monday to assess the incident; the MRP, consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Davidson and Rhali Dobson, concluded Hayashi had committed the offence of “unsporting conduct towards a match official” – an offence that carries a minimum sanction of four games (mandatory one-game suspension plus three additional games).

The MRP, however, has referred the matter to the Disciplinary Ethics Committee after determining the Roar midfielder had committed a Category 2 offence.

The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee will determine whether the offence is sufficiently proven to warrant the imposition of an additional sanction above the one-game mandatory suspension, which will be served regardless of the outcome of the hearing.

The date of the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee hearing is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Newcastle Jets forward Sheridan Gallagher has been issued a Show Cause Notice for a gesture made while walking off the field at AAMI Park after collecting a second yellow card in her side’s loss to Melbourne City on April 11.

The Show Cause Notice comes as a result of alleged breaches of Football Australia’s National Code of Conduct and Ethics. Gallagher has until 5pm AEST on Wednesday, April 30 to respond to the Show Cause Notice.
