There were some special storylines across the Liberty A-League over the weekend.
From Kayla Morrison’s hat-trick performance for Melbourne Victory to Chloe Logarzo’s stunning strike as Western United continued their flawless season.
With a lot to dissect, here are the key talking points from Round 5 of the Liberty A-League season.
Logarzo golazo
Chloe Logarzo. She was at the centre of Western United’s massive 3-1 win over Melbourne City in their top-of-the-table clash at AAMI Park.
Both teams put their 100% records on the line and it was Western who emerged victorious to stay perfect, thanks to Logarzo on Saturday.
Matildas player Logarzo scored twice, including a brilliant strike in the second half to guide Liberty A-League newcomers Western to four wins from four matches to top the standings.
Speaking on Dub Zone, commentator Teo Pellizzeri said: “It’s incredible to think they’ve won every game so far.
“It’s a long season but they look like a team of destiny at the moment.”
Morrison’s comeback complete with stunning haul
Kayla Morrison watched from the sidelines as Melbourne Victory went back-to-back in the Liberty A-League last season after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2020-21.
Morrison made her comeback in Round 1, but the inspirational captain capped her return on Sunday with a game-breaking performance for the defending champions.
A hat-trick from the centre of defence in a 5-2 win over Newcastle Jets on Sunday.
Morrison, who had only scored two goals in a Victory shirt prior to the weekend, was a menace from set-pieces at AAMI Park, scoring two goals from corners and one from a free-kick.
Flannery’s moment in Perth
While Morrison soared to new heights after her ACL injury, there was another player completing an arduous journey.
Nickoletta Flannery, like Morrison, spent the last Liberty A-League season recovering from an ACL tear.
Perth Glory rallied to a stunning 3-2 win over Canberra United, but Flannery had a moment to remember on Sunday.
Flannery scored for Canberra in the first half at Macedonia Park, where the Glory celebrated their first win of the campaign as United tasted defeat for the first time in 2022-23.
Guess who’s back, back again?
Katrina Gorry was back in a Brisbane Roar jersey over the weekend.
The Roar legend and Matildas star made her first appearance of the Liberty A-League season after an extended break following time abroad.
Gorry’s return helped Brisbane take down lowly Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 on Saturday.
She got through 45 minutes as the Roar snapped a two-game skid.
