Premiers bid farewell to Canadian import and long-serving keeper: Details

Ninja A-League Premiers Melbourne City have confirmed Canadian forward Kathryn Harvey and young goalkeeper Sophia Varley will depart the club at the conclusion of their respective contracts.

Varley, 21, has spent four of the past five seasons at City but with a wealth of experienced keepers joining her in the goalkeeping union throughout the years, the young shot-stopper couldn’t break through to make the No.1 spot her own, making just one senior appearance for the club.

Harvey, meanwhile, joined City for the Ninja A-League 2024-25 season and made 15 appearances en route to sealing the 2024-25 Premiership title.

The import signing scored two goals on debut against Perth Glory in Round 1 and bagged her third goal for the season against Canberra United in December but after nine consecutive starts, struggled to break into head coach Michael Matricciani’s strongest XI through the back end of the season.

Harley and Varley join Rhianna Pollicina on the list of departures from City’s Premiership-winning squad to date, as the club prepares to reload for another crack at silverware in 2025-26.
