Western Sydney Wanderers star Juan Mata has been awarded an MBE for services to sport and charity after he was included in His Majesty King Charles III’s 2023 list of Honorary Awards to foreign nationals.
The World Cup winner officially received his award on June 27 at the Madrid residence of the British Ambassador to Spain.
Mata’s honour owes to his achievements in football as well as his charitable exploits, co-founding Common Goal, which sees its members donate one perfect of their total earnings. To date, over 250 footballers and coaches are members.

“I’m deeply grateful for this recognition,” Mata said after receiving his MBE.
“I’m fortunate to be able to dedicate myself professionally to what I’m most passionate about – football – and even more so that it’s something with such global significance.
“Sport, in general, and football, in particular, have a unique ability to unite and connect people, and to drive positive change. This honour strengthens our commitment to continue supporting those who strive to improve lives through our beloved game.”
“Through his leadership and vision with Common Goal, Juan has shown how football can be a force for good,” British ambassador Sir Alex Ellis said.

What is an MBE?
According to the official website of The Honours System of the United Kingdom, a Member of the Order of the British Empre (MBE) is awarded for achievement or service in and to the community which is outstanding in its field and has delivered sustained and real impact which stands out as an example to others.
