The Newcastle Jets continue to build a strong team for next season with the signing of former Socceroo Kasey Wehrman on a two-year deal.
The Queenslander’s arrival at the Jets is the third significant signing made by the club this week after Kiwi international Jeremy Brockie and one-time Socceroo Ruben Zadkovich also inked deals with the Jets.
Wehrman’s signing fills the midfield gap left by the departure of Jets skipper Matt Thompson and Korean Jin-Hyung Song.
Boasting numerous appearances for Australia at under-20 and under-23 levels, including at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 32-year-old Wehrman has accumulated 12 full caps for the national team, the last coming in 2006 in an international friendly against Ghana at Loftus Road, London.
Wehrman, who hails from the outback town of Cloncurry, enjoyed a number of successful seasons in the old National Soccer League with Brisbane and Perth before plying his trade overseas in Norway with Moss FK, Lillestrom SK, Frederikstad FK and FK Lyn Oslo.
Jets CEO John Tsatsimas expressed his delight at having captured Wehrman, particularly after the recent signings of Brockie and Zadkovich.
“Naturally we’re thrilled to announce that we’re bringing Kasey into the club from next season,” Tsatsimas said.
“The level of experience and quality that he possesses is without question, and there is no doubt that he is the kind of player that our young squad can learn from. So we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle when the squad resumes pre-season training in May.”
