Jakobsen: I’ve got big shoes to fill as Adelaide captain

Michael Jakobsen says he’s got big shoes to fill as Adelaide United captain.

Jakobsen, 33, was appointed Reds skipper at the club’s season launch on Friday night.

The Dane is the seventh captain in the club’s history, and takes the armband from legendary Spanish midfielder Isaias, who left the club in May.

Preview: Central Coast Mariners v Adelaide United

Isaias won the Premiership and Championship double in 2015/16, won the FFA Cup twice (2014 and 2018) and was voted Adelaide’s Player of the Season four times over the course of six seasons (2013/14, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19).

“It’s a big honour and some big shoes to fill after Isaías,” Jakobsen said.

“So I’ll do my best and I’ll try to lead the team out on the pitch as best I can and hopefully I’ll do a good job.”

Jakobsen is no stranger to the armband, having captained Melbourne City in his second year in Victoria.

Now firmly settled in the City of Churches with his family, the defender is looking toward a big season under new boss Gertjan Verbeek.

“My family they’re really happy here, especially my kids they’re happy where they are and that makes it a lot easier for me and my wife.

“So we’re enjoy it here and hopefully we will make a good season this year.”

“It’s a new system. It’s a new coach, so there’ll always be a period of time where we have to get used to the ideas.

“But as I said before I think we are on the right track. We lost some good players, but you see some of the new signings here they’re filling in the gaps and I’m really happy with the squad right now.”
