Sydney FC star Remy Siemsen says her side’s shaky form through the second half of the 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign has only intensified the squad’s hunger to clinch the Premiers Plate in tonight’s unmissable winner-takes-all clash with Melbourne Victory at Cromer Park.
Sydney FC were runaway winners at the halfway mark of the season. Six wins from six games sent the Sky Blues flying out ahead of the pack, but two wins from five followed the early assault as Ante Juric’s side opened the door for rivals to contend for top spot.
And that’s exactly what Melbourne Victory have done, getting to within two points of Siemsen and the Sky Blues ahead of the final game of the regular season, to be played between the two bitter rivals on Wednesday, March 31 (kick-off 7.35pm AEDT).
Sydney are currently second on goal difference alone to Brisbane Roar, and need a draw at the minimum to secure the Premiers Plate. But a win to Victory would see Jeff Hopkins’ team leapfrog both the Roar and Sky Blues to clinch it for themselves.
It’s a Big Blue rivalry with even greater significance than the norm.
Speaking to Simon Hill and Alex Brosque on SEN’s new football show ‘The Global Game’, Siemsen said she hopes to see a raucous home crowd in attendance at Cromer Park, to help her side to claim the ultimate bragging rights in the derby of all derbies.

“I’m very excited. I love playing at Cromer Park, and I think there’ll be a lot of fans there to cheer us on tomorrow night,” Siemsen told Hill and Brosque.
“It’s a huge game, and we definitely want to be lifting some silverware at the end of the game.
“All the support will mean the world to us.
“It’s the Big Blue, it’s always been a long rivalry with Melbourne Victory.
“They’re a quality side. Every year we meet them either in the Finals or just before. We always know that’s going to be a big matchup.
“They’ve got quality in their side with the likes of Kyra Cooney-Cross and Lisa De Vanna to name a (couple). I think that we can match them tomorrow night.
“It’s going to be a very important match… we know what’s at stake, and we’re all very pumped for it.”

Siemsen continued: “Leading into finals we want to get a big three points and show what we’re really made of.
“I think obviously having a few upsets, it put a new fire in our bellies to come out bigger and better, and redeem ourselves.
We said from the outset, from the start of pre-season that we wanted to be lifting both the Championship and the Premiership. We have a chance to do that tomorrow night, and we know how big tomorrow night’s going to be.”
