Round 8 Preview of the Hyundai A-League
This Hyundai A-League round is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for our partner, UNICEF, to support children in Australia and south-East Asia. Football fans are encouraged to donate to UNICEF Australia by visiting www.unicef.org.au. Funds raised will support UNICEF programs for vulnerable children.
During this round we also farewell referee, Mark Shield, who is retiring from the game. He will referee his last Hyundai A-League match tomorrow when Queensland Roar take on Adelaide United at Suncorp Stadium. Shield has an impressive portfolio of appointments particularly on the international stage, which includes refereeing at the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and 2006. At a local level he has also significantly contributed to the success of the Hyundai A-League. On behalf of the football community, FFA wish Mark all the best for the future and thank him for his dedication and contribution to the game of football.

Newcastle midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse is set to make his 50th appearance at a national league level. As a teenager Wheelhouse made 20 appearances for Newcastle United in national soccer league, and to date has made 29 Hyundai A-League appearances.
Meanwhile, Newcastle Jets’ coach Gary Van Egmond is set to coach his 50th match in the Hyundai A-League. Van Egmond’s impressive record since taking the reins in Round 8 of the 2006-07 season stands at 22 wins, 15 draws and 12 losses – and includes the 2008 Hyundai A-League Championship.

Since making his Australian national league debut 10 years ago, Clark has played for Canberra Cosmos (1998-2000, 21 appearances); Parramatta Power (2000-2001, 17 appearances); Central Coast Mariners (2005-2008, 61 appearances so far). The next Hyundai A-League appearance for Perth Glory goalkeeper Frank Juric, will be his 100th appearance at national league level in Australia. Juric played his debut national league match in January 1993 with Melbourne Knights, securing 70 national league appearances for the Knights – including a Grand Final victory in 1995; plus another 25 with Collingwood before heading to Europe in 1996. Juric returned to Australia in 2008 to join Perth Glory.

Probably the most astounding result of the Hyundai A-League-s first season took place in Round Eight when Melbourne Victory (who eventually finished second-last) demolished eventual Champions Sydney FC 5-0 at Olympic Park.
This round in 2006…
Gary Van Egmond, who celebrates his 50th Hyundai A-League match as coach in Round Eight 2008/09, made his debut coaching appearance in Round Eight 2006/07, taking the Jets to its first win of the 2006/07 season. Despite the team-s ordinary start, Van Egmond eventually took the Jets to the Preliminary Final in 2006/07.
This round in 2007…
A rematch of the previous season-s Grand Final (where Melbourne thrashed Adelaide 6-0) saw Adelaide United gain some revenge with a comprehensive 4-1 win to the Reds at Hindmarsh Stadium in Round Eight 2007/08.
