This week Sydney released coach Frank Farina following the club’s 2-1 loss to Victory in last week’s Hyundai A-League Elimination Final.
Since then speculation has ramped up over his successor.
It’s understood that favourite for the job Graham Arnold is unlikely to take the Sky Blues job with Newcastle Jets his likely destination.
Another option for Sydney could be a top level Italian manager to work with assistant coach Alessandro Del Piero, should the superstar opt to hang his boots up but remain involved with the club.
This might be the smartest choice but the Herbert option would tick both boxes of A-League and international experience.
The former Wolves defender had success with Wellington Phoenix in getting them into the A-League finals on more than one occasion while simultaneously coaching the All Whites.
Herbert took his nation to the 2010 World Cup where the Kiwis stunned the football world. They were the only unbeaten country at the tournament but bowed out of the group stage after draws with Slovakia, Paraguay and then-reigning world champions Italy.
Herbert left Phoenix at the back end of season eight to focus on national team duties.
He parted ways with the NZ FA after Mexico knocked New Zealand out of contention for Brazil 2014 late last year.
