Melbourne Victory defender Matthew Foschini will miss two matches after FFA’s independent Match Review Panel upheld his recent red card and declined his club’s appeal against the decision as “frivolous”.
The 21-year-old was controvsersially sent off for a challenge on German midfielder Thomas Broich in the first half of Saturday night-s pulsating 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar.
Victory lodged an appeal this afternoon, arguing that referee Ben Williams-s report that the challenge “endangered the safety” of Broich was wrong, aiming to have the youngster free to face Central Coast Mariners this Saturday night.
Melbourne Victory Football Director Francis Awaritefe said, “Having reviewed the incident from all available angles we believe there is clear evidence of an error in the issue of a straight red card.”
However, this afternoon the MRP decided to uphold Williams’s decision, and gave the player an additional one-match suspension for Victory’s “frivolous” submission of an obvious error application.
Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Ante Covic also received a one-match ban for his red card during the match against Brisbane.
