Graham Arnold spent time with Dunbar Rovers FC last week, helping prepare the side for their semi-final match. The session helped benefit the Johnny Warren Football Foundation.
The Eastern Suburbs Football Association side took part in a training session with ‘Arnie- at Alexandria Park last Tuesday night leading up to their 2-nil semi-final win against Waverly Old Boys on the weekend.
Dunbar Rovers Director of Football, Marc Coughlin, praised the Mariners for their contribution towards the club.
“It was an excellent session and all the lads really enjoyed it,” he said. “I am sure everyone has walked away from the session having learned something new.
“Graham was extremely generous with his time and given that it-s the week of our semi-final, I personally think the session hit the spot. We pass on our thanks to Graham again and hopefully we can go on and win our grand final.”
The former Qantas Socceroo striker had an illustrious playing career with Dutch sides Roda JC Kerkrade and NAC Breda, as well as R.F.C de Liège and Charleroi in Belgium. Indeed, Arnold also represented Sydney United and Northern Spirit in the National Soccer League.
His retirement from playing provided him with an opportunity to work from the bench as he took on a managerial role at his ex-club Sydney United, Northern Spirit, as well as at a national level with both the Qantas Olyroos and Qantas Socceroos.
The Johnny Warren Football Foundation provides a pathway to elite football for young players living in New South Wales through its dedicated programs and top-level coaches. It creates a significant lift to the game employing the vision of Australian legend Johnny Warren in developing Australia-s style of football.
Dunbar Premier League Coach, Charlie de Sousa, said the session helped underpin the club-s commitment to play attractive football.
“It reinforced the Dunbar coaching philosophy of playing attractive attacking football, on the ground whilst maintaining possession,” he said.
“Graham gave us some insight into his work at higher levels and was very open to questions at the end of the session, which was great. I think all players and coaches learned something so it was an excellent experience all round.”
Arnold said he enjoyed getting back to grassroots football, and was delighted to learn the Dunbar team had triumphed in their semi-final clash.
