Classic Matches | Adelaide record largest A-League victory

Adelaide United demolish the North Queensland Fury in the A-League’s largest ever victory.

Some days you just can-t stop the onslaught.

Sitting at the bottom of the A-League table and with the finals out of reach it was an afternoon that the North Queensland Fury would never forget.

Adelaide United-s 8-1 home demolition of the Fury remains a league record for both the biggest victory and the highest score in an A-League match.

Sergio van Dijk and Marcos Flores both scored hat-tricks for the home side as they effortlessly picked apart the Fury-s defense.

Van Dijk set up Flores in the fourth minute to get the scoring underway as the Dutchman cut the ball in from the left for Flores to head home.

Flores then found space in the midfield and put a beautiful through ball in to set free Travis Dodd, as the Adelaide captain drilled the ball low past Justin Pasfield on 28 minutes.

Ten minutes on Dodd returned the favour as some flashy footwork in the box saw him put it on a platter for Flores as the home side moved to a 3-0 lead.

As halftime approached Flores skinned his man before his parried shot fell into the path of Iain Ramsey who had an easy finish to extend his side-s lead to four goals.

It was more of the same after the half as van Dijk headed home with only 70 seconds of the second stanza complete, before he had his second when he drilled the ball low into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Panny Nikas finally grabbed a goal back for his side when he struck the ball outside the box to beat an outstretched Eugene Galekovic with just under 20 minutes remaining.

It was to be Adelaide-s day though as van Dijk and Flores both completed their hat-tricks as both internationals scored off headers as they completed the 8-1 smashing of the hapless North Queensland side.

Adelaide would go on to finish the season in third position but were knocked out in the second week of the semi-finals by Gold Coast United.

If the Fury-s confidence wasn-t already shot from sitting bottom heading into the match with the Reds it surely was following it as they finished the season with eight straight defeats.

They ended the year four points behind Perth Glory in last in what was to be their last season in the competition.
