Key change to Australia Cup format creates ‘exciting’ play-off for A-Leagues quartet: Details

The 2025 Australia Cup final rounds play-offs will take place during the Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series in an “exciting” change to the competition format.

Darwin will host Australia Cup football for the third consecutive year to determine who will secure a spot in the Round of 32 and this time around, the play-offs have been moved forward to May to coincide with the conclusion of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League regular season.

Set to feature the four clubs who finish 10th to 13th in the A-Leagues, the revised scheduling to a mid-week event away from a pre-season environment will “ensure teams can field full, in-form squads to enhance the quality and intensity of each match”.

With a pair of Australia play-off fixtures scheduled for Tuesday May 13 and Wednesday May 14 at Darwin Football Stadium, bottom side Brisbane Roar, Perth Glory, Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners are set to compete as it stands with three rounds remaining in the Isuzu UTE A-League.

HISTORY! Aussie football record shattered after another goal fest in Isuzu UTE A-League

In the 2024 Australia Cup, Western United, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar all descended on Darwin as Perth and Newcastle reached the Round of 32 before Macarthur Bulls hoisted the trophy aloft in September.

“We’ve loved bringing the Hahn Australia Cup Final Rounds Playoffs to the Top End as part of our broader strategy to give all corners of the country access to high-quality professional fixtures,” Football Australia CEO James Johnson said.

“The response from the football community across the Northern Territory has been so pleasing over the last two years and reinforces the strength of football in bringing communities together. The ability for these Playoffs to connect the professional level of our game with the grassroots is an invaluable part of our broader work within the region.

“An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of Football Northern Territory and we are so thankful for their contribution to these Playoffs and look forward to another fantastic set of games in Darwin.”
