Austin goal not enough as new star emerges: E-League Round 4 wrap

Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners remain the teams to beat in the E-League after strengthening their grip on the top two places in Round 4.

But the performance of the night undoubtedly belonged to Melbourne City’s Josh Wood, who broke out of Marcus Gomes’ shadow with an electrifying five-goal performance against Brisbane Roar.

  • Sydney FC did enough to see off an improving Wellington Phoenix, becoming one of two teams to reach 12 points after four rounds.

PS4: Mark ‘xMarkoHD’ Brijeski 2-1 Christian ‘Fweshest’ Bartolilo

Mark Brijeski maintained his perfect record with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wellington’s Christian Bartolilo.

Brijeski got off to a flyer with two goals in the first 13 minutes, although Bartolilo ensured there would be no blowout by quickly cutting the deficit.

That’s the way it stayed as the unbeaten Brijeski held firm to notch his fourth straight E-League win.

Xbox: Samer ‘Samer96_’ Elbadar 3-2 Justin ‘justmanutd12’ Josevski

Samer Elbadar wrapped up Sydney FC’s aggregate success by seeing off Justin Josevski 3-2 on Xbox.

Nathan Burns tucked away Phoenix’s first in the ninth minute, though the lead was erased by the Sky Blues moments later.

Elbadar then completed the quickfire turnaround by punishing an error and rammed home the advantage with a third after the restart.

That gave Josevski a mountain to climb and, although he pulled one back, it was little more than a consolation as Phoenix were left still searching for a maiden point.

Newcastle Jets 2-1 Melbourne Victory

  • Newcastle Jets banked their first E-League points by edging out Melbourne Victory over two closely-contested legs.

PS4: Bohdan ‘BLfifa’ Ling 1-1 Mouad ‘MuadZwed’ Zwed

A fast-finishing Bohdan Ling struck late to deny Mouad Zwed in a nail-biting 1-1 draw.

Following a scoreless first half, Zwed looked to have done enough when he broke the deadlock courtesy of a cool finish from his E-League team-mate and real-life Victory forward Mitch Austin.

But Ling dramatically equalised late in normal time and almost stole it at the death, a well-worked move coming back off the base of the post as the pair finished level.

Xbox: Dane ‘Bossierhickory8’ 1-0 Mitch ‘ALCATRAZZ_20225’ Austin

Dane Crow clinched Newcastle’s first aggregate triumph by edging out Victory’s Mitch Austin 1-0.

With scores level after the PS4 leg, Crow rifled in what proved to be the winner in the 14th minute.

Austin pressed for an equaliser but wasn’t unable to find the goal that would have given Victory a much-needed needed result.

Central Coast Mariners 5-4 Western Sydney Wanderers

  • Central Coast Mariners needed until the 90th minute of the second leg to shake off Western Sydney Wanderers and stay level on points with Sydney FC.

PS4: Kiran ‘KyrenFIFA’ Gupta 4-2 Rick ‘RDOUBLETTT’ Tran

Kiran Gupta successfully navigated a rollercoaster encounter with Rick Tran to prevail 4-2 on PS4.

Gupta speared in a low finish for an early opener, but Tran hit back prior to the 20-minute mark and grabbed a shock lead five minutes from the break.

Andrew Hoole restored parity for the Mariners on the stroke of half-time and the topsy-turvy nature saw Gupta inch back ahead with a calm finish just before the hour.

The scoring was eventually completed from the spot, sealing the Central Coast competitor’s fourth win from four.

Xbox: Matthew ‘StrawHat Camels’ Camilleri 1-2 Joseph ‘OhNoAGoat’ Nassar

Matthew Camilleri buried a vital late goal to secure Central Coast an aggregate triumph despite a 2-1 Xbox loss to Joseph Nassar.

Two goals from Nassar either side of half-time – the second via a defensive mix-up – squared the ledger on aggregate and teed up a grandstand finish

Camilleri put that frustration aside to clinically dispatch a 90th-minute finish that ultimately made the difference in a tense tie.

Brisbane Roar 1-8 Melbourne City

  • Melbourne City made it three on the trot as their most complete pair of performances in the competition brushed aside Brisbane Roar.

PS4: Dino ‘ol_Mate_’ Flocco 1-5 Josh ‘joshingwood’ Wood

Josh Wood seized a commanding first-leg advantage for City by overwhelming Dino Flocco 5-1.

Wood was in fine early touch, effectively putting the match beyond doubt with three goals inside 20 minutes.

Flocco cut the margin midway through the half, before Wood added another two for an insurmountable four-goal lead that remained intact throughout the second stanza.

Xbox: James ‘Cripsy’ Williams 0-3 Marcus ‘SoccerStar00777’ Gomes

Marcus Gomes built on City’s comfortable first-leg cushion with a professional 3-0 win over James Williams.

Bruno Fornaroli stretched the already large advantage after a patient start from Gomes, who strung together a delightful passing move for a second after half-time.

And the Xbox star jinked his way through for a skilful late third that sealed a one-sided aggregate result.

Adelaide United 3-4 Perth Glory

  • Perth Glory caused a boilover to move level with Adelaide United on six points.

PS4: Zachary ‘vDreamz-Shooter’ May-Burgess 2-3 Peter ‘saisanas’ Saisanas

Zachary May-Burgess’ impressive second-half comeback fell just short as Peter Saisanas escaped with a 3-2 win for Perth.

Saisanas started brightly, notching the first on 17 minutes and doubling his advantage with a bottom-corner finish after the half-hour.

May-Burgess got on the front foot in an attempt to keep the tie alive and he did just that beyond half-time, cutting the deficit courtesy of a Shane Lowry own goal and then drawing level 20 minutes from time.

However, Saisanas survived the scare as he surged forward once more and unleashed a Ruud Gullit piledriver to recapture a decisive lead.

Xbox: Jamie ‘FUTWIZ Jamie’ O’Doherty 1-1 David ‘HighFly357’ Cook

David Cook held on for a 1-1 draw with Jamie O’Doherty that sealed a valuable overall victory for Perth.

Cook crucially edged ahead right on half-time, only for O’Doherty to claw level immediately after the restart.

The Reds representative then spurned a gilt-edged chance to level matters on aggregate and it proved costly, Adelaide slipping to their second defeat in four rounds.
