Round 20 result
Brisbane Roar:
Match rescheduled for Melbourne City’s AFC Champions League Elite match
Western Sydney Wanderers:
2-1 loss to Newcastle Jets (A)

Both Brisbane and Western Sydney need this win to keep their slim finals hopes alive, but it won’t be a straightforward task for either of them.

Brisbane’s last match before their weekend off was costly, with both Chris Long and Nick D’Agostino sustaining potentially season-ending ankle and knee injuries respectively.

Western Sydney continued their habit of scoring first in matches when Bozhidar Kraev headed home a set piece against Newcastle; but again they couldn’t hold on to the lead, falling 2-1.

There is a clear divide in form across the league, with last placed Wanderers the only side currently outside the top six to have won in their last five league matches.

Brisbane will be aiming to change that, though they will be relying on some depth up front. With no Long or D’Agostino, responsibility will fall to Justin Vidić and Michael Ruhs to lead the line.

It was a 0-0 draw when these sides met back in the middle of December.

Wellington Phoenix v Perth Glory

Current table position
Wellington Phoenix: 11th
Perth Glory: 10th

Round 20 result
Wellington Phoenix:
1-1 draw against Adelaide United (A)
Perth Glory: 2-2 draw against Auckland FC (A)

Wellington haven’t won since the 18th of January and Perth haven’t won since the 31st, though they both took a crucial point home in clashes against top sides last weekend and will be keen to convert that into three points in Round 21.

It was a coming of age match for NPL graduate Luca Tevere, the 24-year-old midfielder landing both assists in the Glory’s 2-2 draw in Auckland.

The Phoenix needed to be resolute in defence against a dominant Adelaide in the second half last week, conceding just the one goal from 12 shots to hang on to the draw.

The points were shared when these sides met in October; Jaiden Kucharski and Adam Taggart made it 2-0 to Perth, before Wellington fought back through Ifeanyi Eze and Carlo Armiento to make it 2-2.

Central Coast Mariners v Adelaide United

Saturday, March 14 – polytec Stadium – 3:00pm AEDT

Round 20 result
Central Coast Mariners:
3-1 win over Macarthur FC (A)
Adelaide United:
1-1 draw against Wellington Phoenix (H)

Central Coast have been one of the form teams in the competition, unbeaten since January 18, moving into sixth on the table and still climbing.

The Mariners’ grit and determination was on full display last time out, with Alfie McCalmont, Bailey Brandtman and Nathanael Blair scoring in a 3-1 win against 9-man Macarthur FC

Meanwhile Adelaide have endured a frustrating couple of weeks, with 1-1 draws against Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix in the past two games.

Luka Jovanović moved into equal third place on the golden boot ladder with his goal against Wellington, his seven goals put him just two off the league best despite missing a big chunk of January with the AFC U-23 Asian Cup.

Central Coast had their way with the Reds when they met at the start of the year, McCalmont, Brandtman, Sabit Ngor and Miguel Di Pizio all scoring to make it 4-0.

Newcastle Jets v Auckland FC

Auckland FC: 2nd

Round 20 result
Newcastle Jets: 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers (H)
Auckland FC: 2-2 draw against Perth Glory (H)

A top of the table clash in the Hunter awaits us on Saturday evening, when league leading Newcastle take on second placed Auckland.

The Jets were back to winning ways last weekend, with Eli Adams and Mark Natta’s second half goals bringing them back from a goal down to secure the three points against the Wanderers.

Auckland were held to a point by the struggling Perth Glory as Sam Cosgrove scored his eighth goal of the season inside 10 minutes, before the Black Knights then profited from a Matt Sutton own goal to ensure they salvaged a point at Go Media Stadium.

The New Year’s Day match between these sides was full of action early on, Lachie Rose and Will Dobson scored for Newcastle, Jesse Randall scored for Auckland and Jets Max Cooper was sent off all inside the first 21 minutes.

Rose grabbed a late sealer to make the final score 3-1 in a game where both Alex Badolato and Christian Bracco both suffered season-ending ACL Injuries.

Melbourne Victory v Macarthur FC

Sunday, March 15 – AAMI Park – 7:00pm AEDT

Current table position
Melbourne Victory: 5th
Macarthur FC: 7th

Round 20 result
Melbourne Victory:
2-2 draw against Sydney FC (A)
Macarthur FC: 3-1 loss to Central Coast Mariners (H)

Melbourne Victory came away from Sydney with a point but after Juan Mata’s world class  free-kick and Charles Nduka’s immediate impact goal had them looking comfortable at 2-0 up, it was a disappointing showing.

With Jason Davidson not travelling to Sydney due to personal reasons and both Adama Traoré and Franco Lino injured, Arthur Diles turned to joint top scorer Santos to fill the hole at left-back.

The Brazilian held up admirably in the first half, but they will be hoping one of their three nominal left-backs can be fit and ready for this one.

Macarthur had a real struggle in their 3-1 loss against Central Coast and they’ll continue to feel the effects of it, with defender Tomislav Uskok and goalkeeper Alex Robinson both sent off and suspended for this week.

The Victory haven’t lost since the 1st of February, while Macarthur haven’t won in any competition since their 6-2 dismantling of Melbourne City at the end of January.

These sides played out a 0-0 draw when they met in December.

Melbourne City: Match rescheduled for AFC Champions League Elite match

Sydney FC pulled it out of the fire against Melbourne Victory, coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 through goals from new additions Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan to nab a point and hold onto third place.

Melbourne City have been focussed on their AFC Champions League Elite campaign, making it as far as the round of 16 before bowing out to Thai champions Buriram United on penalties in their midweek clash.

While they’ve been doing well in continental football, their league form has suffered. Their last league match was a heavy 3-0 defeat to Premiership contenders Auckland FC, they haven’t won since the 16th of January and have fallen four points back from the top six.

These sides played out a 0-0 draw when they met on the 3rd of January.
