Tottenham chairman Levy explains ’emotionally difficult’ Ange Postecoglou exit

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy explained the “emotionally difficult” decision to sack A-Leagues legend Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou was relieved of his duties, despite ending Spurs’ 17-year title drought by winning the UEFA Europa League in May and guiding Tottenham to Champions League qualification.

The 1-0 win over Manchester United delivered the club their first European trophy in 41 years, however, the former South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory, Socceroos, Yokohama F.Marinos and Celtic boss was still sacked following a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League.

“I’m very grateful to Ange,” Levy told the club’s in-house media channels after turning to Thomas Frank as the Australian’s replacement. “I don’t regret appointing Ange.

“In his first season we finished fifth and in the second season we were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions. We felt that we needed a change.

“I have got an excellent relationship with him and told him he will always be a part of our history. Himself and his family are always welcome back.

“It was a collective decision. It wasn’t my decision. We do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.”

Levy added: “You saw the outpouring of emotion with the parade. It was just incredible. We’ve won a European trophy.

“But it’s not enough. It’s what we haven’t done that is more important. We need to win the league.

“We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.”
