SYDNEY FC BRUSH ASIDE CITY
Sydney FC weren’t at their classy best but they still defeated a brave 10-man Melbourne City 3-1 on Friday night to kick off Round 11 in the Hyundai A-League.
If good sides win when they don’t play well, then this showed why the Sky Blues are such a force in the league as they moved eight points clear of second before the remainder of the round.
To compound City’s woes, striker Ross McCormack was subbed off in the first half with a left knee problem before Manny Muscat was red-carded in the second half.
LATE PEN HAS JETS FANS SINGING
An exciting finale saw Newcastle Jets beat Adelaide United 2-1 on Saturday at McDonald Jones stadium as the Jets season just gets better and better.
An exciting second half saw the Jets score a late penalty by Dimi Petratos in the 89th minute to seal another win and close the gap on leaders Sydney FC to five points.
Earlier, Andrew Nabbout gave the Jets a lead before George Blackwood equalised for the visitors from SA
WANDERERS BACK IN BUSINESS
In an entertaining, high-intensity contest Western Sydney Wanderers defeated nine-man Central Coast Mariners 2-0 in Gosford on Saturday night in the Hyundai A-League.
After last week’s 5-0 loss in the Sydney Derby, the Wanderers showed greater commitment and discipline, winning their first three points under new coach Josep Gombau.
Young Keanu Baccus impressed for the red and black in midfield.
For the hosts, they impressed in the first half with some excellent wing play but after going down to 10 men around the hour mark then nine men shortly after, it was too much for the Mariners who slumped to their second loss in as many weeks.
CASTRO KICK-STARTS GLORY
Perth Glory defeated Wellington Phoenix 1-0 with star Spanish striker Diego Castro slotting a second half winner for the hosts at nib Stadium.
After conceding two very late goals a week earlier in the loss to Newcastle, there was to be late fade out for Kenny Lowe’s men who’ve reinvigorated their charge for the six with this win.
VICTORY TOO GOOD
Melbourne Victory moved into the six after a strong first half laid the platform for a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
Goals to Rhys Williams and Kosta Barbarouses in the first half. Massimo Maccarone getting one back for Brisbane in the second half.
The win will give them a boost ahead of the Melbourne Derby on Saturday, their first at Suncorp since the 2014/15 season.
