Central Coast skipper Alex Wilkinson hopes the Mariners’ ability to come back from big deficits is not tested again this season.
The inspirational Mariners defender was in the thick of the action as Central Coast came back from three goals down to score an epic 3-3 draw against Sydney on Saturday night.
It was the second time in a month the Mariners have clawed their way back from three goals down to snatch a point. Wilkinson hopes it is the last.
“It was a great effort and sums up what our club is all about,” Wilkinson said.
“We-ve got great character in the club and a lot of our success is based on that. But we-ve got to tighten up our defence.”
“You can-t keep giving teams three goals start and expect to come back all the time.”
The miracle comeback against Sydney ended what was a big week for Wilkinson.
He has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at the Mariners until 2011.
“It was a relatively easy decision,” he said.
“Getting that sorted out now is a good thing.”
The news Wilkinson is staying put is a great boost for the Mariners. There were reports several rival A-League clubs were keen to sign the Central Coast player.
Meanwhile, defenders Andrew Clark and Nigel Boogaard are expected to be fit for the Mariners next match against Adelaide at Gosford on November 15.
Clark has been out of action with a dislocated shoulder, while Boogaard was heavily concussed against Wellington last month.
