Here’s everything you need to know about the team from Sydney.

  • History

Sydney are one of the most successful clubs in Westfield W-League history, incredibly finishing outside of the comeptition’s top three on just three occasions.

They won back-to-back titles across the 2009 and 2010/11, and finished on top of the league in 2009 and 2012/13.

Sydney are also the team with the equal-most grand final appearances, playing in five. They’ve lost two of the last three deciders, to perennial champions Melbourne City.

It has been a breeding ground for some of the best players in Australian football, with the likes of Sam Kerr, Alanna Kennedy, Michelle Heyman, Sarah Walsh, Kyah Simon and Caitlin Foord having turned out for the club in the past.

  • Colours and badge

Sydney plays in the same Sky Blue kit as their Hyundai A-League counterparts, and wear a white away kit and black alternate strip.

Their badge features the club’s name and an outline of the Sydney Opera House.

  • Home ground

Sydney uses a number of grounds as their home base. They occasionally play double-headers with the Hyundai A-League side at Allianz Stadium.

They’ve also called Leichhardt Oval, Seymour Shaw, Jubilee Stadium and WIN Stadium home in the past.

  • Coach

The current head coach of Sydney FC is Ante Juric, a former national league footballer and four-time Caltex Socceroo.

He’s been heavily involved in international set-ups, a big part of the U17 and U19 women’s sides. Sydney FC is his first senior coaching gig, and he led the squad to a second place finish in his first season in charge.

Sydney boasts some of the strongest players in the league, and made a major signing announcement of six Westfield Matildas at the beginning of October.

Those names are the returning Lisa De Vanna, Caitlin Foord, Chloe Logarzo and Amy Harrison. Also on the incoming list this season is youngster Amy Sayer, plus Championship-winner Alanna Kennedy.

Also key for Sydney this season will be American trio Aubrey Bledsoe, Sofia Huerta, and Danielle Colaprico.

  • Best season

Sydney FC’s best ever season was undoubtedly their 2009 season, where they finished the league with seven wins, two draws, and one loss: a record good enough to see them finish Premiers of the league.

Within that season were three big, big wins: 6-0 over Adelaide United in round five, 5-2 over Perth Glory in round eight, and 6-2 over Adelaide United in round nine.

They waltzed through the Semi Final with a 3-0 win over Canberra United, before battling to a 3-2 win in the Grand Final over Brisbane Roar.

It made them the second ever side to do the double.

Sydney FC have lost the equal-most Grand Finals of any side in Westfield W-League history, with three defeats (2011, 2016, 2018).
