We’re down to the final round of the Westfield W-League regular season and Newcastle Jets attacker Katie Stengel is making a late charge in the race for the golden boot.
While Perth Glory star Sam Kerr is out in front and favourite to finish with the prize, Stengel has one last chance to chase the Westfield Matildas star down in Round 14.
Here’s a look at the leaderboard as we head into the final round of fixtures.
13 goals: Sam Kerr (Perth Glory)
After being presented the prestigious Young Australian of the Year award last week, Kerr came out and bagged a brace in Glory’s loss to the Wanderers on the weekend.
It’s taken her season tally to 13 from just nine games, although with Glory’s season over, she won’t get a chance to add to her haul this weekend.
But with a nice buffer, Kerr remains in the box seat to add yet another accolade to her incredible season for club and country.
10 goals: Katie Stengel (Newcastle Jets)
The Jets’ American import has been a consistent performer this season but hit her peak in her side’s 5-1 demolition of Canberra United last weekend.
Stengel hit a hat-trick to go to double figures for the campaign, edging into second and within striking distance of Kerr.
She’ll need another treble against Melbourne City on Saturday to at least draw level with Australia’s golden girl, but with the Jets in a buoyant mood, you wouldn’t rule it out.
9 goals: Rachel Hill (Perth Glory)
Like Kerr, Hill has been a consistent scorer for Glory all season, ending her campaign with the club with a goal in the loss to the Wanderers.
Her return of nine goals for the season is excellent, but with Glory out of games for 2017/18, she won’t have an opportunity to add to her total.
6 goals: Makenzy Doniak (Adelaide United), Natasha Dowie (Melbourne Victory)
While the Reds will finish with the wooden spoon, US import Doniak has been a standout in front of goal.
She increased her tally to six with one against the Roar last weekend, moving in alongside Victory star Natasha Dowie who last scored in Victory’s Round 12 clash against the Wanderers.
The Reds play Victory in the final round giving both the chance to pull away to finish fourth or higher on their own.
