Once again the unfaltering Heyman proved her worth scoring some classic strikers goals to help her side turn around a 1-0 half-time deficit. New Zealand international debutant Emma Kete showed she will be an asset to the Glory in bagging the opening goal of the match with a cool finish. However Heyman, following on from a double in the opening round against Adelaide, could not be held down and blitzed the opposition once again scoring a 16-minute treble.
Canberra dominated possession, and, like the previous week in Adelaide, created a significant number of goalscoring opportunities. Despite the defeat, Perth, having suffered a considerable loss of personnel during the off-season, will take confidence from the match after holding their well-regarded opponents until well into the second half.
Sydney FC, Canberra-s opponents next weekend, were indebted to their star recruit Rapinoe for rescuing all three points against Melbourne Victory. The USA international, in her second and final outing for the Sky Blues, displayed rare skill and athleticism throughout the match before grabbing a well-deserved goal seven minutes from full time.
Sydney-s indefatigable midfielder, Kylie Ledbrook, still sporting a massive lump on her forehead from the previous week-s physical encounter with Brisbane Roar, opened the scoring in the early stages. The enterprising Jodie Taylor scored a well-earned equaliser from the penalty spot just past the hour mark, which seemed set to earn the visitors a share of the points, until Rapinoe-s late intervention.
The focus in Newcastle also centred on star signings as the Jets unveiled debutants in Matildas duo Melissa Barbieri and dynamic striker De Vanna, plus long-serving German international defender Ariane Hingst, for the visit of Adelaide United. The new faces needed little settling in time and the dynamic De Vanna set up former Sydney FC utility Linda O-Neill for an early goal, before scoring a second-half brace herself.
The home side, in front of Jets W-League record crowd at Adamstown Oval, were dominant throughout and could have added to their tally on several occasions, most notably as Nicola Bolger struck the woodwork. The Jets- early form sets up an intriguing match-up next weekend against champions Brisbane.
