Western Sydney Wanderers re-sign ‘key player’ after ‘devastating’ injury

Western Sydney Wanderers have re-signed young gun Dylan Scicluna amid his recovery from a long-term injury.

Scicluna has signed a new two-year deal after suffering a “devastating” anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in December that cut short his 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Wanderers in 2023 and established himself as a key part of Alen Stajcic’s team this season, playing in nine games before hurting his knee.

Scicluna – a former Aston Villa and Wolves youngster in England – has scored one goal in 25 matches with Western Sydney.

“It’s going to be a little bit emotional, because it’s going to be a long road to get back there (to previous form),” said Scicluna, who is a Malta youth international and earned his maiden senior call-up in November before withdrawing due to injury.

“I have to focus on taking it day by day, that first game back I’m going to have the biggest smile on my face and I just want to get stuck in straight away.

“My aim for the next two years with the Wanderers will be to get myself back physically and mentally stronger. So that I can start next season with flying colours, with the confidence and self belief that I had before I got injured.

“And then, for that season, I want to take it game by game. Individually building myself back up and helping the team as much as possible.

“Hopefully we can be successful, winning games back-to-back and go on runs as a team. I hope we can win the league and go on to qualify for the Champions League.”

Western Sydney – eighth in the standings and three points outside the top six – are preparing for Saturday night’s blockbuster Sydney Derby against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

Wanderers head coach Stajcic added: “Dylan is a key re-signing for us in setting a platform for the young players that will be the foundation of this club in the next few years.

“Having established himself in the first team, Dylan has shown that he will be a key player of us in the future.”
