It’s the first of two matches in four days in which Sydney FC head from their home stadium and take thrilling Hyundai A-League action into the community. And what a treat is in store for supporters who head to WIN Jubilee Oval in Kogarah, as record-breaking Brisbane Roar are the visitors.
Having last week broken the all-time record for the longest unbeaten run by a team in any Australian sporting code, this side deserves your attention. So, whether you decide to come along to salute them, or in the hope that Sydney FC will shoot them down, you should be there as this remarkable footballing machine takes to the field in your back yard.
Roar arrive in New South Wales still buzzing after breaking the record last week. In fact, not only did they break it, but they smashed it to pieces.
There were no signs of nerves in the slightest from the home side as they looked to overtake the 74-year-old record of 35 unbeaten games set by NSW Rugby League club Eastern Suburbs.
With a place in the history books so close, you would have forgiven them for being like a cricketer in the nervous 90s, but Roar simply set about ripping poor Perth Glory to shreds in front of nearly 20,000 fervent fans. The 4-0 win was as emphatic as it sounds, with braces from Albanian international Besart Berisha and Issey Nakajima-Farran putting the result beyond doubt before the half-time whistle had blown.
Of course, this means that they are even more of a target now and, until this amazing run comes to an end, every other Hyundai A-League team will treat a match-up with them like a cup final. Everyone is going to want to be the side to beat them.
If Sydney are to achieve it, then they will have to do better than the last time the two sides met in New South Wales earlier this season. Home fans will be desperate for revenge after the match-up in Week 3, when Berisha’s first Hyundai A-League goal and Thomas Broich’s match-killing strike were enough to send the Sky Blues to defeat.
However, there were signs in that game that Sydney are capable of doing some damage to the Champions. Had the ball fallen kinder to Nick Carle and Bruno Cazarine in front of goal, it might have been a different story.
Cazarine did manage to get on the score-sheet last weekend in Wellington, but his strike was too little, too late for Sydney, who have now suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season. Not the ideal preparation for the visit of Brisbane!
Can Sydney FC get their campaign back on track and be the team that finally brings Brisbane’s incredible unbeaten run to an end? Having written themselves into the history books last weekend, there is always the chance that the visitors will take their eye off the ball – but don’t bet on it.
