It’s a Sunday showdown at Skilled Park. United have shown real promise in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season but are still searching for their first win. Will it come this weekend?

After two decent draws in the first fortnight of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season, United may have suffered their first defeat last week, but losing to Brisbane is something that many teams will have to suffer. And, besides, there was still enough about the manner of their performance to show signs that their first win is just around the corner.
In a battling display that belied the 3-0 scoreline, United were committed and competitive and, had Dylan Macallister’s effort gone in rather than hitting the crossbar with the score at 1-0, things could have been very different.
A real plus point was the fact that Dutch import Maceo Rigters put in a fine performance on his debut. On the basis of that showing, he is an exciting player that has the wherewithal to set the Hyundai A-League alight.
United take on a Newcastle Jets team that have won two of their first three games and who this week see newly-appointed boss Gary van Egmond take charge for the second time. He was head coach at Newcastle between 2006 and 2009, guiding them to grand final glory in 2008 and being named Coach of the Year.
The Squadron will be keeping their fingers crossed that he can bring about similar success this time round. Also coming back for a second spell is striker Francis Jeffers, who may make his return debut at Skilled Park. He had a big impact last season, contributing Premier League experience to Jets’ attack.
Last Sunday, Newcastle gave interim coach Craig Deans a fine farewell with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in a rough and ready F3 derby at Ausgrid Stadium in front of 14,421 fans.
Kiwi international Jeremy Brockie’s goal midway through the first-half was the difference between the sides, although, in truth Newcastle created enough chances to have scored more. They’ll be quietly confident they can get amongst the goals at Skilled Park this weekend.
