Having come so close to silverware last season on both fronts (their points tally would have been enough in other years to win the league and they were seconds away from Grand Final glory), the Yellow & Navy are desperate to conclude this campaign in happier fashion.

The Mariners have certainly given punters their money’s worth in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season with some breathtaking displays, while Melbourne Victory’s games are never short of incident. There rarely seems to be a match involving the men from Victoria without a glut of goals, penalties and red and yellow cards. So who knows what this Wednesday’s battle will bring?
Strangely, considering how these two teams have been involved in plenty of high-scoring, massively dramatic games in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season, the one occasion they have met so far ended scoreless.
At Bluetongue Stadium back in early November, Victory managed to extend their unbeaten run to four games with a solid defensive display that nullified Mariners’ potency in front of goal. Indeed, the visitors, who the week before had bravely held then-top Brisbane Roar to a draw despite playing for an hour with nine men, could even have emerged from NSW with all three points, had captain Adrian Leijer angled his second-half header better.
The Central Coast will be needing a more incisive performance this time round if they are to tighten their grip on top spot. While Victory have had an inconsistent and often disappointing season, on their day they certainly have the talent to beat any other Hyundai A-League team – the likes of Kewell, Thompson and Hernandez are enough to give any defence sleepless nights – so the ladder leaders are going to have to be on top of their game to win this one.
It’s sure to be a blinder at Bluetongue Stadium on Wednesday night! With so much talent on display, and with Mariners sitting prettily at the league’s summit, why would you even think of being anywhere else?
