Last season’s Brisbane Roar side was one of the best teams the Hyundai A-League has ever seen. Not only did they walk to the title and then show incredible guts to claw their way back into the grand final to secure the double, but they did so playing football the right way.
When you watch Roar, you really are witnessing the beautiful game. With a host of key players departing in the close-season, pundits thought that they would find life tougher this time round. It is therefore all the more remarkable that, this season, Ange Postecoglou’s side might just be even better!
So, if you haven’t made it to Suncorp yet, you shouldn’t delay. What awaits you is a side that plays the kind of delicious, passing, possession football that does the Hyundai A-League proud. This team has to be seen to be believed.
Last Friday, Roar proved – if proof were needed – what a fine team they are with a comprehensive victory over previously unbeaten Gold Coast United.
In a rivalry round clash that could have proved to be a banana skin for the reigning champions, Brisbane were forced to work hard for the points against Miron Bleiberg’s promising side, but goals from Erik Paartalu, Besart Berisha and Mitch Nichols ensured their perfect start to the season continued.
Illustrating the depth in his squad – as he did by bringing on Kofi Danning to provide the assist for the crucial second goal against Sydney a week earlier – Ange Postecoglou introduced Massimo Murdocca in the second-half and his arrival was a real high point. His set-up for Roar’s second goal was especially impressive.
In contrast to Roar’s incredible opening to the campaign, Adelaide United have found life in the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season hard going.
After defeat in Perth on the first weekend, they seemed to have kick-started things with a fine win over Melbourne Victory, only to fall to a surprise defeat at home to Sydney FC last Saturday.
Ironically, considering The Reds had started their first two matches slowly and improved in the second-half, this time the opposite was true. 1-0 ahead at half-time against a team that had failed to score in either of their first two matches, the game seemed there for the taking, yet they threw away their lead and ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.
Suncorp stadium is not the place you want to go on the back of a morale-sapping defeat, so at least the visitors can take some positives from the loss. The Reds enjoyed decent spells of possession against Sydney and Dario Vidosic got his first goal of the campaign. That will be an important confidence-booster for the front-man, especially considering that, on Friday, he comes up against a defence that has yet to concede at all this season.
These two were huge rivals last season as they both fought for silverware at the top of the ladder, and tussles between them are always crackers, so this match-up at Suncorp is not to be missed.
