Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar have released strongly worded statements after an “incident of racism” was “directed at goalkeeper Jamie Young” in Saturday’s Hyundai A-League fixture between the two sides.
The Roar came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw in Mudgee, a clash in which Brisbane shot-stopper Young was racially abused.
Western Sydney slammed the behaviour as “deplorable and not acceptable” and said they “would like to extend a sincere apology to Jamie Young for being subjected to such behaviour.”

The Wanderers statement continued: “We applaud and are extremely proud of those Wanderers supporters in the immediate vicinity to this individual who promptly, and vociferously, objected to the behaviour demonstrated and alerted authorities to have the offender removed from the venue.
“This individual is not to be welcomed back to any Wanderers fixture.”
The Brisbane view
The Roar also condemned the incident and spoke of the club’s “zero-tolerance policy regarding racism of any form in the game we love”.
“Racism has no place in our society and we do not condone this type of behaviour.”
The Roar’s statement added: “Brisbane Roar applauds, and thanks, the Western Sydney Wanderers management, staff, security and fans for their swift action and support.
“Brisbane Roar’s number one priority is supporting Jamie Young.
“The Club will offer its full cooperation and assist Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the relevant authorities to investigate this matter further.”
