Melbourne Victory’s dependable veteran Leigh Broxham will remain at the club for a further two seasons, after signing a contract extension.
Broxham, who is on the verge of playing his 200th Hyundai A-League match on Saturday night against Western Sydney Wanderers, has committed to Victory until at least the end of the 2017/18 season.Â
Only Archie Thompson (217) has played more games for Victory than Broxham, who made his debut in Round 19 of the 2006/07 campaign.
“Leigh has been a fine example of loyalty, longevity and adaptability over a long and successful career so far,” said Victory head coach Kevin Muscat.
“He was someone I’ve had the privilege of playing with and coaching, and through everything he has maintained a high level of professionalism and passion for this club. Â
“He has taken over the responsibility of being captain in Carl’s absence with class and his leadership skills cannot be questioned.
“I’m sure he’ll look back at the end of his career and be proud of what he’s achieved at Melbourne Victory, but he will be hungry for more success before that happens.”Â
Broxham has led the team as acting captain in the absence of Carl Valeri for the majority of the current season.
As has become his trademark for Victory, he has successfully played a number of positions on the pitch, including as a central defender, right-back and midfielder.
At 28 years of age, he is on track to break the all-time record for appearances for a single club, currently held by John Hutchinson, who played 228 games for Central Coast Mariners.
“It’s been an incredible honour to represent a great club like Melbourne Victory for the last decade and I’m looking forward to that continuing into the future,” Broxham said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities Victory has given me since I arrived as an 18-year-old and I’m proud of what the club has achieved in that time.
“I’m as committed as ever to playing my part for the team, as we strive for more success in the A-League.”
