Ubogagu credits teammates after ‘huge’ win over Jets

Brisbane Roar striker Chioma Ubogagu has praised her teammates after they defeated Newcastle Jets 1-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Thursday night.

The England international’s 56th minute goal was all that separated the sides in what was a real arm-wrestle in the Hunter.

Ubogagu said the win meant a lot after Brisbane’s mixed start to the Westfield W-League season.

“I think it’s huge,” Ubogagu told Fox Sports after the game.

“It could have gone either way with the result, if we got three points, if we didn’t get three points because we’re kind of in the middle of the ladder so I’m proud of the team for fighting for the whole 90 minutes.

“Getting the shut-out was just as important as getting the goal.”

Ubogagu was on hand to clean up Yuki Nagasato’s scuffed shot just before the hour mark and her clean finish ultimately proved the difference.

Having scored in her England debut earlier this month, Ubogagu would have been forgiven for basking in the glory but the striker instead took the time to praise her teammates and coaching staff.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” she said.

“I’m happy, I’m part of a great team, really blessed to play with great teammates, great coaching staff, they prepare us really, really well and it’s easy to do what’s asked of you in situations.”

With only one win from three matches Brisbane had their work cut out for them playing Newcastle, a side they haven’t tasted success against since 2014.

They arguably should have held a two-goal lead heading into the break but Jets goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom was equal to anything the Roar threw at her during the first half.

Ultimately however Brisbane’s pressure told and they’ll head north having secured what could be a vital win come season’s end.

The Roar will face Sydney FC away from home next week while Newcastle host reigning Champions Melbourne City as they look to get back in the winner’s circle.
