Sydney FC have secured the services of centre-back Alexandar Popovic for an undisclosed fee from K League 1 side Gwangju FC.
Popovic has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Sky Blues in the Isuzu UTE A-League after the 22-year-old originally arrived from South Korea on loan until the end of January.
Sydney, though, opted to make Popovic a permanent fixture within their squad and subsequently activated the purchase clause within his loan agreement.

Featuring 16 times so far this season in all competitions, Popovic quickly settled into the heart of Sydney FC’s defence and is now tied to the club until the end of 2027-28 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.

“I couldn’t be happier to commit my long-term future to Sydney FC,” said Popovic after his new permanent contract was inked.
“This is a special club with a proud history, and I’ve felt at home here since day one.
He continued: “The coaching staff, my teammates, and the Members and fans have all been incredible, and I’m determined to repay their faith in me.

After coming through the ranks at Adelaide United, Popovic made the move to South Korea in 2024 and went on to feature 10 times in K League 1 for Gwangju before returning to the Isuzu UTE A-League with Sydney.
“Alexandar has been very good since joining us,’ said Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay.
“He has shown maturity, composure, and technical ability and will be key to our defensive structure going forward.
He added: “He’s only going to get better from here and has all the attributes to achieve great things in his career.”

Popovic missed Sydney FC’s 4-1 win over Adelaide United in Round 17 due to a slight groin complaint but the club are hopeful he’ll be fit to feature in this weekend’s Sydney Derby.
The news of Popovic’s permanent arrival comes off the back of the club also announcing the signing of fellow central defender Alex Grant.
Signed on a deal until the end of the season, the former Perth Glory man returns to the Isuzu UTE A-League following spells in both Korea and China and adds depth to the Sky Blues’ backline following the departure of Hayden Matthews to English Championship side Portsmouth.
